If you’re looking for a way to keep your home *really* clean this season, consider finding a healthier alternative to bleach. Although most of us have grown up in homes where bleach was the weapon of choice for serious messes, the epitome of “getting something clean”, and your “best bet” to keep germs from spreading — the reality is that it isn’t as great as the hype. Not only can it be a potential danger for your family’s health and well-being, there are actually better, more effective methods for cleaning.

Why is bleach so bad?
If you’ve looked into bleach, you probably know that there are two main kinds — oxygen bleach and chlorine bleach. And while oxygen bleach is safer than chlorine bleach, it’s still not something we’d recommend for your home. And here’s why…
1. Having bleach in your home with pets or young children is dangerous. Accidental consumption or inhalation can be lethal.
2. Bleach can cause respiratory issues for people in your home, especially for those who already have issues like asthma, COPD, emphysema, or pneumonia. Regular exposure to bleach can cause chronic respiratory problems, as well as headaches and allergic reactions.
3. Using bleach can cause damage to your body’s mucus membranes, which can impair your immune system.
4. The human microbiome is sensitive — but *so* important to your overall health. Unfortunately, using bleach can negatively impact microbes that your body needs to function properly.
5. Bleach is NOT a green product. It contributes to air pollution in your home, not to mention global air pollution from the companies that manufacture it. Bleach also creates hazardous runoff that can be dangerous for wildlife, as well as humans.
