Earth Day is on Monday April 22nd and, as a eco-friendly, let’s-go-green company in New Mexico, we’re looking forward to it!
Below are three ways you can celebrate Earth Day this year, plus a list of local events you can attend.
Three Fun Ways to Celebrate Earth Day 2024
#1: Go for a hike. Yes, it might be cliche. But getting outside on Earth Day to really appreciate nature is one of the best ways to remind yourself just how awesome (and awe-inspiring) our planet is. To make your hike feel more like an Earth Day celebration, consider trying one of the ideas below:
- Invite friends, family, and neighbors
- Bring bags and gloves (or trash sticks) to clean up anything along your path as you hike
- Rather than trying to complete a certain distance or loop, focus on slowing down and really taking in all of your surroundings. This is sometimes referred to as “forest bathing” — give it a search to learn more about its benefits and how to best practice it!
- Bring a picnic
- Go somewhere new — there are so many great hikes and trails in New Mexico, pick one you’ve never been to before and ask groups or friends for suggestions!
#2: Start a garden or care for the one you have. Getting your hands dirty in soil is ideal on Earth Day. If you don’t have a garden, start one! Even if it’s just one pot with a tomato plant in it. And if you have a garden going, get outside and tend to it. Are there weeds to be pulled? Spots for new plants to go in? Enjoy and appreciate your ability to grow your own produce and flowers right at home.
#3: Save the bees! Our pollinators are so important to our planet, which is why we love finding ways to help them any way we can. One of them is super simple and fun, making it the perfect activity for Earth Day this year: Building native bee houses. Kind of like a birdhouse for bees, these bee houses not only help the bees in your area, but they’ll reward you with more robust gardens, too. You can search online for ideas to build your own bee house, but this article from Almanac is a great place to get started.
