For a lot of people, fall in Albuquerque is synonymous with the Balloon Fiesta. And, while we also love the amazing sight each morning as balloons (hopefully) take off for Mass Ascension, there is so much more to love about Albuquerque in the fall. And, thankfully, not all of it has to happen in large crowds at five in the morning.
Curious about what we’re up to this season?
Here are our seven favorite things to do in Albuquerque come fall…
- Take a walk (or ride) in the bosque. ’Tis the season for amazing colors, and the bosque is one of the best places to see them all. Thanks to the beautiful riverside cottonwoods, taking a stroll or riding bikes with the family along the Rio Grande makes for a wonderful weekend activity in the fall. And, because the weather is cooler, you don’t have to get as early of a start. While there are plenty of great places to pick up the trails along the Bosque, starting at the Alameda Open Space is one of our family’s favorites.
- Make a trip to Wagner’s. While it’s not technically in Albuquerque, Corrales definitely feels like part of our city. A wonderful small farm experience that is known for its green chile and pumpkin selection, planning to have a bowl of green chile stew when you visit is always recommended. And, for the craft beer enthusiasts, it’s helpful that the new Ex Novo Brewery is now open just across the road, making an afternoon outing even more enjoyable. (If you’re an IPA fan, definitely try the on-tap Eliot.)
- Try a new coffee spot. Sure, we all love a fast morning fix from our favorite drive through, but there’s something special about lingering with a great cup of coffee on a brisk fall morning. And, thankfully, Albuquerque has tons of amazing coffee shops all over town to enjoy, including some of our favorites, Michael Thomas, Humble, and O’Beans.
- Explore the Sandias. A cool fall day is a great excuse for a hike in the Sandias. We’re so lucky as a city to have such an amazing escape just a short drive away. From the variety of trails just off Tramway to La Luz and, of course, the Tram, there’s plenty to do once you arrive, whether on foot or bike. And, as an added perk, the new restaurant, Ten 3, is now open on Sandia Peak, offering incredible views and a great menu.
- Try a new green chile recipe. Nothing says fall in Albuquerque more than the smell of fresh green chile roasting. Enjoy it even more by bringing it into your home and trying out a new recipe! Whether in a stew, casserole, or on top of – well, just about anything – there’s always a new idea for cooking with chile. And, if you’re in need of inspiration, invest in a New Mexican cookbook to get the ideas flowing.
- Go on a dinner date. Yes, it’s an excuse to wear that cozy sweater or those new boots out on the town, but enjoying a fall evening over a fantastic meal is still a great idea. When the weather’s nice, try getting a spot on the patio at Farm & Table or Campo at Los Poblanos. And, on colder evenings, enjoy a fresh pizza from Farina or tapas at Salt and Board. If you’re looking for entertainment while you eat, make a date at Tablao Flamenco in Hotel Albuquerque for an evening you’ll never forget.
- Visit the farmer’s markets. There’s still a lot happening at the grower’s markets around town in the fall. From fresh produce to fall-inspired bouquets and plenty of handcrafted art, Albuquerque’s markets are always fun to explore. And, as the holiday season approaches, they’re a great place to stock up on unique and thoughtful gifts for everyone on your list.
And while you’re out having fun, be sure to give Albuquerque’s favorite house cleaners a call so you can #claimyourweekend.
